SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women’s basketball team has signed Olivia Pierce-Eiselein to a NAIA letter of intent for the 2009-10 season head coach JD Gustin announced on Thursday. Pirece-Eiselein becomes the third player to sign with the Griffins for next season.

Head coach JD Gustin is pleased to announce that Nicole Yazzie has signed a NAIA letter of intent to join the Westminster women’s basketball team in 2009. Yazzie, a 5-6 guard from West Valley City, Utah, prepped at Bingham High School where she was a four-year starter at point guard for the Miners. During her time at Bingham, the team went 85-11 (.885) and won the 2007 Utah Class 5A State Championship.

Allie Eastman of Rich High School in Rich, Utah has signed an NAIA letter of intent to join the Westminster women’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season. Eastman was named the 2008 and 2009 Class 1A MVP while leading her team to the state championship each year. During her time at Rich High School the team went an impressive 85-11 overall.

The Westminster women’s basketball completed the most successful season in school history in 2008-09. They finished the year with a 27-7 and went 14-0 during the Frontier Conference season to claim the first conference title in school history. They set a school record with a 17-game winning streak and participated in the NAIA National Championships for the third consecutive year.

The NAIA announced the 2008-09 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and the Westminster women’s basketball team placed eight players on the list. The eight are: Keshia Catten, Dani Evans, Mara Hoskins, McKenzie Jessop, Elisa Leader, Nicole Lynch, Michelle Pace, and Alexis Tucker.

The Westminster women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end with an 80-71 loss to defending national champion Vanguard on Friday morning. Westminster played Vanguard tough and held a 33-32 lead at the intermission. The opened the lead to 44-41 with 12:35 to play, but Vanguard went on a 29-10 run over the next eight minutes. The Griffins kept fighting and cut the lead to seven with 27 second left but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Westminster women’s basketball team used a strong second half performance to defeat Loyola (La.) 62-47 to advance to the second round of the NAIA National Championships. After leading by just two at the intermission, Westminster dominated the second stanza 36-23 to make the second round for the second time in three trips to the event.
