Westminster's Music ProgramWhy Study Music? To study music is to immerse oneself in one of the richest and most complex art forms, and one of the most vibrant aspects of civilization for millennia. Like other major art forms, it expresses and reflects innumerable aspects of the human spirit and human experience, sometimes with tremendous beauty and power. It is clearly a source of pleasure and joy, but can also lead to tremendous personal enrichment through the uniting of physical, intellectual, emotional and even spiritual challenges; increased sensitivity to beauty in general; a better understanding of culture; and insights into what it means to be human. Why Choose Westminster's Music Program?
At Westminster College, music is part of a small, liberal arts environment, which also happens to be advantageously situated in the heart of a major metropolitan area featuring several nationally and internationally respected arts organizations with which several of Westminster's associate faculty are affiliated. Westminster is the only college or university in Salt Lake City offering a music minor, so it is an excellent place for talented musicians who are pursuing majors in other fields to further their musical education and experience as an official field of college study. Both music minors offered--academic and performance--embrace the diverse challenges of solo and ensemble performance, theory and aural skills, history, and technology. On campus, music-making opportunities are available to everyone, as are courses examining music specifically or in combination with culture and the other arts. Private lessons are available on most instruments and voice. All private instructors are prominent, well-respected local professionals. Four performing ensembles-- the Westminster Chorale, Chamber Singers, Chamber Orchestra, and Jazz Combo--offer ensemble experience to those interested and capable. Tours and music theatre productions are scheduled on a regular basis, and May term provides interesting and unusual course opportunities tuition free to students enrolled full-time during the preceding fall and spring semesters. Small class sizes foster a level of personal attention seldom found at other colleges or universities. The Jewett Center for the Performing Arts and Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory provide superb facilities. What Else?An audition is required of all students entering the music minor program. Music scholarship auditions are held during the month of January, but non-scholarship auditions are held year-round by appointment only. |
