Geoff Payne Works out with Utah Jazz

Geoff Payne from Westminster College is working out with the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association on Monday morning. Payne was named the 2008-09 NAIA National Player of the Year after leading the Griffins to the quarterfinals of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Championships and a 30-5 overall record.


Griffins Add Two More

The Westminster men’s basketball team has announced the signing of two more players for the 2009-10 season. Head coach Tommy Connor announced that Jeff Christensen and Nick Davis each signed an NAIA letter of intent to join the Griffins in the fall. With the addition of Christensen and Davis, Westminster has now signed six players for next season.


Jordan Bjornberg Signs with Westminster

The Westminster men’s basketball team has signed Jordan Bjornberg to an NAIA letter of intent for the 2009-10 season head coach Tommy Connor announced on Tuesday. Bjornberg is the fourth player to sign with the team for next season and the third from Idaho.


Alex Drecksel will Join Griffins Next Season

Westminster men’s basketball coach Tommy Connor has announced that Alex Drecksel has signed a NAIA letter of intent to join the Griffins in 2009. Drecksel becomes the third player to sign with the Griffins for next season.


Ryan Strong Signs to Join Griffins in 2009

Head coach Tommy Connor has announced that Ryan Strong has signed a NAIA letter of intent to join the Westminster men’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season. Strong, a 6-2 guard from Lewiston, Idaho, led his Lewiston High School team to the Idaho Class 5A State Championship as a senior. It was the first state championship in 61 years for the school.


Griffins Sign Salt Lake Community College Forward

The Westminster men’s basketball team has announced the signing of Ben Walker, a 6-8 forward from Salt Lake Community College. Walker spent one year at the Air Force Academy prior to serving a two-year church mission in the Philippines. He transferred to Salt Lake Community College upon returning home and helped the Bruins win their first ever national championship. Walker prepped at Lehi High School where he was named First Team All-State as a senior.


Men's Basketball Season Recap

The Westminster men’s basketball achieved several firsts during the 2008-09 season. They finished the year 30-5 overall and won the Frontier Conference regular season with an 11-3 record. The team also won the first Frontier Conference Tournament championship it school history this season. The 10-game winning streak to begin the year was the best start to a season ever by a Westminster team and led to the school’s first No. 1 ranking in the NAIA weekly poll. The season was capped by advancing to the round of eight at the NAIA National Championships, getting past the opening round for just the second time ever.


Geoff Payne is Named NAIA National Player of the Year

Westminster senior forward Geoff Payne has been named the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and the National Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year. Payne becomes the first Westminster player to receive either award. He was also named to the 2008-09 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-Tournament Team.


Westminster Places Five on NAIA Scholar Athlete Squad

The NAIA announced the 2008-09 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and the Westminster men’s basketball team placed five players on the list. Westminster joins three other programs with five players, more than anyone else. Weston Anderson, Les Brown, Conner Nielsen, Nate Sanchez, and Allen Schowengerdt were all recognized for their performance in the classroom and on the basketball court.
